 Introduction

We invite you to the most momentous episode in English history…. The English Civil War – and Chester’s pivotal role in it.

The whole of England was locked in a desperate fight for the very future of England herself! For the Parliamentarians, the military genius of Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army pitched headlong against the Royalist forces of the Stuart King Charles I in the bloodiest war in the nation’s history.

The epic struggle between elected democracy and the absolute power of monarchy pitched brother against brother, father against son and town against city…… and that includes Chester!

It’s September 1645, and after three years of bitter conflict, the English Civil War is reaching its decisive climax. In a last, desperate bid to keep the only port in England still loyal to the King in Royalist hands, Charles leads a large force in an attempt to break the parliamentary siege of Chester.

The Great Siege of Chester & The Battle of Rowton Moor Tour

In the comfort of a coach we’ll take you on a 350 year old journey of intrigue, treachery and violence as the very future of England is fought over – to the death!   All the pivotal Civil War locations within the city walls and Rowton Moor are included in the tour, the key buildings including the house where King Charles slept, the nerve centres of the the siege, the pubs where Royalist troops drank and the defensive cannon redoubts set up to protect the City against the Parliamentary Army’s murderous siege and the actual Rowton Moor battlefield where one of the most important battles of the whole Civil War took place on a cold autumn day back in 1645 are included in this tour. We also take you into the tower and stand at the very spot where King Charles stood as he watched his Royalist army at the battle of Rowton Moor.

Our guides will paint a vivid picture of the grim reality of living under siege conditions in the mid 17th century. How did the average Cestrian survive when everyday supplies were cut off? What did they eat? How did they dispose of their dead? How did they keep the Parliamentary forces out – and who finally prevailed in this fight for the City of Chester?

Chester Civil War Pubs Tour

One for the Connoisseurs – visitors can sample a great range of real ales in the same historic hostelries which were actually frequented by both Cavaliers and Roundheads over 350 years ago. This is a superb tour of up to 6 of Chester’s historic public houses and every single one of them has a story to tell from the English Civil War. We ask you to support these local businesses and keep them going for another 400+ years by purchasing a drink in each pub we visit.

Each pub is at least 400 years old – unique atmospheres, superb real ales, great food and a knowledgable guide to tell the story of each pub and of its role in the English Civil War.
